The Festival Is Not Just For Dulcimers!
2016 Festival Other Workshops & Activities

• AUTOHARP (Beginning)-9-10am - Bring your own instrument or use 1 of the 8 loaner autoharps. Topics covered: Autoharp basics, tuning, types of autoharps and how to play one!!!! Learn a song or two with words and chords.

• BANJO (Beginning) - How to Frail-9-10am – Good teaching techniques for getting the motion down, using three basic tunes.

• BOWED PSALTERY-10:15-11:15am –Loaner instruments and bows available. Topics covered to help beginners - through advanced players using 2-bows. • DRUM CIRCLE-2:45-3:45pm –Want to have a positive experience with music that is no work and ALL FUN? Instruments are provided, but you can bring your own.

• GUITAR: Back-up For Fiddle Tunes-1:30-2:30pm –Bass runs, strumming variations, some chord inversions and improvisational playing with an expert!

• HAMMERED DULCIMER & ACCORDION APPS for iPhone, iPad-1:30-2:30pm Apps to learn & practice Hammered Dulcimer & other traditional instruments.

• SING and PLAY – 10:15-11:15am - Group singing of warm-up exercises to tune voices in harmony to your instruments (play one or more notes and sing a different note). Sing a couple of easy songs in harmony to your instruments.

• SING-ALONG – 1:30-2:30pm - Group singing workshop with a master of participation music! He accompanies himself and others on fretted dulcimer/ guitar/ 5 string banjo/ harmonica/ trombone/ pocket trumpet/ cajon/ etc!

• UKULELE 1 – Strums and Chords-10:15-11:15am – Learn a handful of strumming patterns, chord changes and useful chord progressions for some simple, well-known songs.

• UKULELE 2: Intermediate Chords and Songs-2:45-3:45pm – Basic chord theory using uke, tab, second position chords and chord substitutions to add a jazzy sound to some simple, well known songs. Some loaner instruments available.

• ALL INSTRUMENTS - Putting It All Together-2:45-3:45pm - Stressing fun and interesting repertoire, how to create medleys, dynamic variations, and exciting musical touches to make dancers and audiences respond to your music. Some recordings will be used to illustrate points, but there will be lots of playing of both new tunes and familiar pieces. Team taught.

4:00 pm - 5:0pm

FREE WORKSHOP on Jamming. Open to ALL ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS - all levels.
Tips covered on how to: join in on tunes; follow the rhythm; jam etiquette; simplify tunes on the spot; listen to other players; build a repertoire; suggestions for tune/song resources; start a tune when it’s your turn; counting in/ potatoes/ other starts. This workshop will include running through some simpler jam tunes!!
